How Heating and Air Conditioning Work in Italy

I’d like to explain how air conditioning and heating are used in Italy, as I understand that it’s quite different from the United States. This also applies to:

• ⚡️ Voltage: The amount of energy available in apartments is different.
• 💰 Energy Costs: Electricity and gas are significantly more expensive here than in the US.

🌞 Heating (Winter)

• 📅 Period: From mid-October to mid-March.
• 🏢 System: Centralized heating powered by a gas boiler that serves the entire building.
• 🌡️ Radiators: Heat is provided through radiators in each apartment.
  • You can adjust the temperature with a dial on the radiator (from 1 to 5). Most people set it to 2.
• 🕒 Heating Hours: The heating system usually runs only from 7 AM to 7 PM.
• 🌡️ Thermostat: Some apartments have a thermostat, generally set to 19°C or 20°C. The heating activates only when the indoor temperature falls below this level.

❄️ Air Conditioning (Summer)

• 📅 When to Use: Air conditioning is only used during the summer when temperatures exceed 28°C.
  • Both the dehumidifier and cooling functions can be used during this period.
• 🚫 No Heating Function: The air conditioner’s heating function cannot be used because heating is provided by the centralized radiators during the winter.

🛠️ Air Conditioning Usage Guidelines

• 🚪 Turn off when leaving: Air conditioning should not be left on 24/7 and should always be turned off when you leave the apartment.
• ❌ Windows: Never use the air conditioning with the windows open.
• 📅 Seasonal Use: Air conditioning should only be used in summer when it’s hot—never while the heating system is active.
